A recent (2010) study from Wake Forest University showed that even brand new meditators could make a huge difference in their pain experience.  They were taught to meditate, and just practiced for two, thirty minute sessions.  When the researchers stuck their hands in icy water, they could meditate and reduce the pain unpleasantness by 57%.  Their brains were releasing their own pain killers.

That's especially amazing when you know that most people say narcotics only help about 25%!
